#48 Fire and Rain

July 08, 2026

The neighbors were shooting off professional-grade fireworks, so we went to a park where we could lay on the grass and watch the city fireworks from a distance.

There was a sign: “Park closes at 9pm.” There was no gate, so we asked, “How does it close? In what way?” We found out when the sprinklers came on. We jumped up and ran through the dark shower to the car.

The all-night ramen shop lost internet. They couldn’t print receipts. We went back home.

We watched a firework ignite a nearby palm tree. The flames grew, got worse. I said about 10 times in 30 seconds, “Call 911!”

The neighbors strolled slowly toward the tree, looking dazed, saying they’d call, but not calling. A child held the only visible phone.

Adam was on the phone with the dispatcher when a firetruck pulled up. The fire was out within a minute.
